Strawberry & Swiss Chard Smoothie (with a BANG!)

DSCN2505_C_LR This is my “go to” HEARTY morning smoothie with a kick of fresh ginger to give it that 4th of July bang! The local Michigan strawberries are filling up the front table at Bardens – my favorite road-side farmers market.  I love these guys because they are conveniently located with ample parking and all day availability.  Now that I am working part-time in the mornings every day, my trips to the larger Farmers Markets in Holland & Saugatuck are a bit illusive.  Thank goodness for Bardens – oh and they take credit card which is super as I rarely carry cash.  The strawberries now are spectacular – truly little gems of summer.  I eat them as is or toss a bunch in my morning smoothie along with swiss chard (which is my favorite smoothie green) and other healthy ingredients to make a breakfast that carries me many hours until lunch.  I love adding flax meal to my smoothies for the fiber – it helps to keep you satiated all morning.  The only added sweetener is a small amount of honey – you don’t need much with the sweetness of these strawberries.  I add organic yogurt, almonds & almond milk for protein and ginger for spice.  In the summer, I add ice for coolness.  Breakfast in a glass.  Happy 4th all!!!

Strawberry & Swiss Chard Smoothie (with a BANG!)
 
Serves: 16 ounces
Ingredients
  • A sprinkle of love!!
  • 1 cup local strawberries
  • 1 cup organic swiss chard
  • 3 tablespoons organic greek plain yogurt (less sugar in the plain)
  • 2 tablespoons flax meal
  • 2 tablespoons sliced almonds
  • ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons shredded coconut
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, chopped small
  • 1 tablespoon local honey
  • ½ cup ice
  • This will make 16 ounces
Instructions
  1. Wash, hull, & half your strawberries
  2. Chop ginger into smaller pieces
  3. Wash and chop swiss chard
  4. If you have flax seeds, grind into a meal
  5. Combine all ingredients in blender and process until smooth
  6. Finish with halved strawberries
  7. Give gratitude for this beautiful raw & satisfying breakfast.
